M-PESA Business Till (Buy Goods) FAQs

The M-PESA Business till is an enhancement of the existing Lipa Na M-PESA till that enables business owners to collect payments on the till and use the money collected to make other transactions directly from their till such as:

  • Pay to another Buy Goods Till
  • Pay to a mobile number
  • Pay to a utilities (Paybill) till
  • Withdraw cash at an M-PESA agent
  • Sell Airtime and earn commission

Business owners will now be able to do more with M-PESA Business till

  1. Receive payments from other businesses and customers
  2. Make payments:
    1. Pay another business from the till – Paybill or Buy Goods
    2. Make payments to customers
  3. Withdraw funds:
    1. To the owner’s nominated number
    2. To Bank
    3. At M-PESA Agent
  4. Sell airtime to customers using collected funds.

What are the transaction limits for the new M-PESA Business till?

Merchant Sell Airtime

Note:

  • The business owner will be charged a maximum of 0.5% and not more than KShs.200 per transaction for money collected on the till.
  • Collections of Ksh 1,000 and below are FREE.
  • There are no customer charges for payments made to the M-PESA Business Till except for payments made at fuel stations.

How to activate your till (SIM Card)

  1. Insert SIM card into a mobile phone handset.
  2. Dial 212 and select preferred language.
  3. Make a test payment to the till number provided.
  4. You will receive a payment SMS confirmation.

 

How to activate M-PESA Business Till

+

  1. Dial *234*2#
  2. Enter store number
  3. Accept Terms and Conditions
  4. Business owner receives operator id & start key
  5. Dial *234*2# and enter store number
  6. Go to account services and select change pin
  7. Enter start key as old PIN, create your new pin

How to change your PIN for the Business till:

+

  • Dial *234# from nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your store number
  • Select option 5 - Account Services
  • Then select option 1 - Change PIN
  • Enter your operator id that you received in the activation M-PESA SMS.
  • Enter old PIN as the start key that you received in the activation M-PESA SMS.
  • Enter new secret pin that you can easily remember
  • Enter your new secret pin again.
  • Select Option 1 for Yes to confirm you want to change pin then submit the request.

 

You will receive a confirmation message that your pin has successfully been changed and till successfully activated.

 

You are now ready to start using your M-PESA Business till.

Withdraw Funds:

  • Withdraw to my number
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 1 - Withdraw Funds
  • Under withdraw funds, select Option 1 - withdraw funds to my number
  • Enter amount you wish to withdraw
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin

 

You will receive an SMS confirmation with the amount withdrawn to your mobile number.

 

  • Withdraw Funds: From Agent

 

Once at the M-PESA agent,

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select Option 1 - Withdraw funds
  • Then select option 2 - from Agent
  • Ener the M-PESA agent number
  • Enter amount you wish to withdraw
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • Confirm the M-PESA agent details and amount you wish to withdraw by selecting option 1 for Yes

 

You will receive a pop on your phone screen that the requested withdrawal has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an SMS from M-PESA confirmation with the amount withdrawn to your mobile number.

  • Withdraw to Bank:

 

There are two options under withdraw to bank i.e.

 

  • Withdraw all funds: in this option, the merchant will withdraw entire balance in the till.

 

(b) Withdraw specific amount: in this option the merchant specifies the amount of money to withdraw.

 

 

  • Withdraw all funds to bank
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select Option 1 - Withdraw funds
  • Then select option 3 - To my Bank
  • Select option 1 - Withdraw all
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • You will receive a request to confirm that you want to withdraw all funds to bank. Select 1: Yes

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that your withdrawal request has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA notification SMS that the withdrawal request of all funds to your bank account has been successfully initiated and your funds will be credited to your bank account within 24hrs. The M-PESA Business Till balance will also be displayed.

 

  • Withdraw specific amount to bank
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select Option 1 - Withdraw funds
  • Then select option 3 - To my Bank
  • Select option 2 - Specify amount
  • Enter the specific amount you wish to withdraw
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • You will receive a request to confirm that you want to withdraw all funds to bank. Select 1: Yes

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that your withdrawal request has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA notification SMS that the withdrawal request of all funds to your bank account has been successfully initiated and your funds will be credited to your bank account within 24hrs. The M-PESA Business Till balance will also be displayed.

 

How to make a payment:

  • To Business Till (Buy Goods Till)

 

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 2 - Make Payments
  • Then select option 1 - Buy Goods
  • Enter the recipient Business Till (Buy Goods) number
  • Enter amount
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • Confirm payment to the specified Business till number by selecting option 1: Yes

 

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that your business till payment request has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA confirmation that the payment you initiated to another Business Till has been successfully completed. The M-PESA Business Till balance will also be displayed.

 

  • To Paybill Number

 

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select Option 2 - Make Payments
  • Then select option 2 - Paybill
  • Enter the recipient Paybill number
  • Enter the account number
  • Enter amount
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • Confirm payment to the specified Business till number by selecting option 1: Yes

 

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that the paybill payment request has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA confirmation that the payment you initiated to another Paybill number has been successfully completed. The M-PESA Business Till balance will also be displayed.

 

 

  • Pay to Mobile Number

 

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 2 - Make Payments
  • Then select option 3 - Mobile Number
  • Enter recipient mobile number
  • Enter amount
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • Confirm payment of specified amount to the specified recipient mobile number by selecting option 1 for Yes.

 

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that the payment request has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA confirmation that the payment you initiated has been successfully completed. The amount transferred and the recipient name and phone number and your Business Till balance will also be displayed.

Sell Airtime

+

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select Option 4 - Sell airtime
  • Enter recipient mobile number
  • Enter amount
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin
  • Confirm details of the recipient mobile number and amount of airtime to be purchased by selecting option 1 for Yes

 

You will receive a pop up on your phone screen with a confirmation that the airtime purchase has been successfully initiated.

 

You will then receive an M-PESA confirmation that the airtime sale was successfully completed.  The amount transferred and the recipient name and phone number and your Business Till balance will also be displayed.

Check Business Till Balance

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 5 - Account Services
  • Then selection option 2 - Check Balance
  • Enter operator id
  • Then enter operator pin

 

You will receive an SMS with your Business Till balance.

What is Merchant Self SIM Swap?

Safaricom Merchant Self SIM Swap is a Do-It-Yourself service that enables merchants on M-PESA Business Till to replace their Till SIM card. The process is FREE. You will only need to purchase a replacement line from an M-PESA agent or Safaricom retail shop near you at 50/-

 

SIM swap is applicable to your own till. Only the primary operator who is the nominated number can do a self SIM swap.

Note: You cannot swap another person’s till

 

  • Why would a merchant require a SIM swap?

Merchant may want to replace their New, Lost or Damaged SIM Card.

 

  • How does the SIM Swap work?
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 5 - Account Services
  • Then selection option 5 - SIM Swap
  • Enter your till number
  • Enter the IMSI number
    • IMSI Number: This is the unique identifier for the replacement line that you have acquired. It is found behind the new replacement line acquired.
  • Enter operator id
  • Then enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation message that the SIM swap process has been initiated.

 

Once successfully swapped, the merchant will receive a message confirm that the sim replacement was completed successfully.  Kindly insert your new sim into a handset to begin using it.

Merchant Statements:

This is a Do-It-Yourself automated process where merchant can access their daily, monthly and yearly statement on demand.

 

  • How does it work?

 

  • M-PESA Statement Opt In
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Then selection option 1 - Register for email statements
  • Select option 1 - To accept the Terms and Conditions
  • Enter your email address
    • This will be the email address that will access and receive your statements
  • Select option 1 - To confirm the email address
  • Enter operator id
  • Then enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation message that an email has been sent to the email provided for verification. The verification link will remain active for 24hrs.

 

Once the email is successfully verified, the merchant will receive a message confirmation that the email statement verification has been initiated. The merchant will need to validate their email registration using a 4-code digit sent on SMS.

 

Upon successful registration, the merchant will receive an SMS confirmation that the email registration has been initiated.  The merchant will need to complete the process by validating with a token sent to the nominated number.

 

 

  • Merchant M-PESA Statements Opt In Validation

 

  • OTP (One Time Password) Validation Option 1: USSD Validation
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Then selection option 1 - Verify email using OTP
    • OTP: this is a One Time Password sent to the nominated number
  • Select option 1 - To accept the Terms and Conditions
  • Enter your email address
    • This will be the email address that will access and receive your statements
  • Enter the verification code

 

You will receive a confirmation that your request to verify your OTP is being processed.

 

Upon successful validation, you will receive an SMS confirmation that your email has been successfully registered.

 

 

 

  • Opt in Validation Option 2: Email Validation

 

  • Merchant will receive an email confirmation that the email validation has been initiated and will be requested to enter a validation code to complete the subscription for statements.
    • The confirmation will be sent to the email address that will access and receive your statements
  • Select option 1 - confirm

 

Merchant will receive a confirmation SMS that the email verification process has been initiated.

 

Upon successful validation, you will receive an SMS confirmation that your email has been successfully registered.

 

 

 

 

 

  • How to access Full Merchant M-PESA Statements

 

Merchants can access their 3 months, 6 months, 12 months or full statements for specific period (1 month only) using the following easy steps:

Accessing Full Merchant M-PESA Statement:

  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Then enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 – M-PESA Statements
  • Below partner statements select option 1 - Full Statement
  • Select the statement period
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation SMS that your request for M-PESA statement has been received and is being processed.

 

Upon successful completion, you will receive an SMS confirmation that your full statement has been sent to your email.

 

  • Full statements for a specific period
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Below partner statements select option 1 – Full Statements
  • Below full statements select option 5 - Specific period statement
  • Enter the period range in the required format beginning with: “Date from – Date to
  • Confirm the period specified by selection option 1 - Confirm
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation SMS that your request for M-PESA statement has been received and is being processed.

 

Upon successful completion, you will receive an SMS confirmation that your full statement for the specified period has been sent to your email.

 

NOTE: The above steps apply for 3months, 6months statement request – where merchant will specify the period for the statement.

 

  • Change Email
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Below partner statements select option 2 - Change email
  • Enter new email address
  • Confirm the email address by selection option 1 - Accept
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation message that an email has been sent to the email provided for verification. The verification link will remain active for 24hrs.

 

Once the email is successfully verified, the merchant will receive an SMS confirmation that your email statement registration request is being processed.  You will need to log into the email provided to access the verification code to complete the change of email.

 

Upon successful email validation, you will receive an SMS confirmation that your email has been successfully registered.

 

  • Resend OTP
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Select option 2 - Resend OTP
  • Confirm your request by selecting option 1 - Confirm

 

You will receive a confirmation SMS that your request to resend the OTP has been sent to your email with instructions on how to access the OTP.

 

  • Cancel Registration
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Select option 3 - Cancel email registration

 

You will receive an SMS confirmation that your request to cancel your registration for M-PESA statements has been cancelled successfully.

 

  • Opt out
  • Dial *234# from the nominated number
  • Then select option 2 – M-PESA Business Till
  • Enter your head office or store number
  • Select option 6 - M-PESA Statements
  • Below partner statements select option 3 - Opt out
  • Select confirm to confirm cancellation request
  • Reconfirm opt out request by selecting a specific reason for opting out
  • Enter operator id
  • Enter operator pin

 

You will receive a confirmation SMS that you have successfully been opted out of M-PESA statements email service. To opt in dial *234#.
