Safaricom Urges Western and Nyanza NGOs to Implement Sustainable Projects to End Poverty

As part of their efforts to encourage wider uptake of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) within local communities, the Safaricom and M-PESA foundations today held a forum in Kisumu targeting their partners in the Western and Nyanza region.

The forum focused on the SDGs and how sustainable livelihoods can be used to eliminate poverty in the country.

“The Sustainable Development Goals aim to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. For these goals to be achieved, everyone needs to do their part whether in government, the private sector, civil society, Foundations, NGOs or as individuals,” said Joe Ogutu, Chairman, Safaricom Foundation.

The SDGs are a new, universal set of goals, targets and indicators that UN member states adopted in September 2015 aimed at ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all as part of a new sustainable development agenda.

Both the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations have invested over Sh273million in various projects across the Western and Nyanza region aimed at transforming the lives of those in the local community over the last 10 years. Most projects focus on expanding access to education and health initiatives.

The forum brought together over 100 partners in the region.
