Safaricom Launches Sh118m Festive Push for Lipa Na M-PESA

Nairobi, December 15th, 2015… Safaricom (NSE: SCOM) has launched a new consumer and merchant promotion that is intended to drive growth in Lipa Na M-PESA transactions during the festive season.

Lipa Na Nyumba- Shinda 3 Bedroom, is among other activities that are geared to boost Lipa Na M-PESA transactions by 30% before the close of Safaricom’s Financial Year in March 2016. It will target consumers who make their payments using Lipa na M-PESA as well as merchants, with prizes valued at KSh. 118 million to be won.

“The growing Lipa Na M-PESA ecosystem is enabling an increasing number of payments across various retail outlets, and this promotion aims to reward and appreciate customers who pay for goods and services using Lipa Na M-PESA this season,” said Sylvia Mulinge, Director – Consumer Business, Safaricom.

Three customers stand to win a house valued at KSh. 14 million in the promotion, with 18,000 merchants set to win airtime or cash on their tills during the promotion that runs until January 25th, 2016.

Speaking during the launch of the promotion, Rita Okuthe, Director –  Safaricom Business said that the promotion is also expected to recruit more active agents, as the Cash Lite ecosystem continues to grow.

“We already have over 31,000 active tills and a similar number of inactive tills. So we are taking a two pronged approach to increase the number of Merchants; bring inactive tills back to life and continue registering more Merchants to our network,” said Ms. Okuthe.

The new campaign comes just weeks after yet another successful promotion in partnership with Naivas supermarket which saw a mother of two from Syokimau win the Grand Prize of a three-bedroomed house in Athi River.

Lipa Na M-PESA was launched three years ago as a payments channel for businesses. It has already gained a solid footing in the market with transaction values exceeding Ksh. 15 billion every month.
