Nairobi, Kenya – 15th Aug 2023…  Safaricom has officially flagged off the Western regional finals’ games of the Chapa Dimba football tournament with a series of community engagement drives geared towards transforming the lives of Western Kenya residents.

Safaricom will conduct a free medical camp, digital and financial literary training seminars, Campus Tours dubbed ‘Safaricom Engineering Community Campus Tours’, safety camps, players and coaches’ clinics, among other activities. These will culminate into the regional finals matches scheduled for the weekend of 26th and 27th August 2023

"Leading up to the Safaricom Chapa Dimba regional finals, we have planned two weeks filled with community engagement activities in this region in the areas of health, education, economic empowerment and sports. Safaricom Foundation places a significant emphasis on healthcare, with a primary objective to enhance the health and well-being of vulnerable Kenyans. In conjunction with Zuri Health, we will facilitate complimentary medical check-ups to benefit the people of Kakamega and the wider Western region.  Besides competition and talent development, this season of the tournament is also very much focused on community engagement – which include medical camps, financial literacy trainings, Safaricom Engineering Community Campus Tours, among others," said Peter Ndegwa, CEO Safaricom PLC.

The medical camp will offer free medical check-ups, physician consultations, eye and dental check-ups, blood sugar tests, blood pressure measurements, body fat assessments, and Body Mass Index (BMI) screenings, among other services.

On the free Digital and Financial Literacy training, the telco is partnering with Britam Insurance Company to provide training tailored to Boda Boda riders, vendors, small business operators, shopkeepers etc. who are Safaricom customers in the region. The training is geared towards providing tips that can inculcate a saving culture and enhance credit and investment readiness.

Additionally, the telco has organized the Safaricom Engineering Community Campus Tour at the Masinde Muliro University on 24th August 2023.  This is aimed at cultivating exceptional technological talent within Kenyan Universities by nurturing a culture of engineering excellence through immersive technical experiences. The tour will serve as a platform to demonstrate the profound impact of Technology, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and leveraging the power of online platforms to grow a career in the tech space and earn a decent livelihood.

The community engagements will then build up to the Safaricom Chapa Dimba regional final matches that will be played at Bukhungu Stadium where eight teams, comprising of both boys and girls from the four counties – Busia, Bungoma, Kakamega, and Vihiga will participate.

The teams include The Manace and Lugari Progress from Kakamega, John Osogo and Chakol Queens from Busia, Compel Sportiff and Brenda Girls from Bungoma, as well as Ebwali Boys and Madira Soccer Assassins from Vihiga.
