Safaricom Bags Prestigious Awards at Africa Investment Summit

Nairobi, September 27th, 2013… Leading integrated communications service provider Safaricom has been recognized for its role in deepening Africa’s capital markets through the vibrancy of its listed shares at the 2013 Africa Investor (Ai) Index Series Awards.

Safaricom was awarded the Ai 140 Company of the year award due to the value of its shares as measured by market capitalization and liquidity, as measured by the average daily value traded in US dollars.  

Safaricom’s Chief Executive Officer was also named the Ai40 CEO of the Year, by the leading international investment and communications group at an exclusive invitation-only ceremony held at the New York Stock Exchange.

“It is an honour and privilege to receive these awards. The recognition underscores the adherence to our vision, the hard work by our employees, able management and astute corporate governance at the board level, which has propelled Safaricom’s shares to the current level”, said Safaricom’s CEO Bob Collymore.

Safaricom which is listed at the Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is currently trading at an all-time high share price of Sh8.40 and is the NSE’s most valuable company with a market capitalization of Sh328 billion. The company outperformed eight other nominated listed companies that included East African Breweries Ltd, Equity Bank and the Kenya Commercial Bank.

Commenting on his Ai40’s CEO of the year award, Mr. Collymore added, “At a personal level, I am very humbled to be recognized as the Ai40 CEO of the year. I wish to thank the entire Safaricom team who tirelessly strive to fulfil Safaricom’s collective mandate of transforming the lives of our customers and the Kenyan community”.

Over the years, Safaricom has grown to be the leading company in East and Central Africa and has won multiple awards over the years. They include:  Champions of governance awards (2012) organized by the institute of public secretaries and top honours at the 3rd CIO Awards held in Kigali, Rwanda for its maternal and child health care mobile-based platform.

The Africa investor (Ai) Index Series Awards, are the only international, pan-African awards that recognise and reward Africa’s institutional investors, stock exchanges, best-performing listed companies, stockbrokers and capital market regulators.
