Sounds of the Heart

Music education in Kenyan government schools is not given as much prominence as some other subjects like language and sciences. Three musical groups – The Morans The Old Cambrian & Zeze – hope to shed some light on this by holding a concert to create awareness and help raise funds for Nairobi Schools Music Department.

The goal of the event is not just to raise funds but to also encourage all stakeholders including parents school administrations government and the private sector to come together to help nurture musical talents in our children.

Join them at the Michael Joseph Centre on 11th of April from 7:00 PM to support this worthy cause.

Entry: 500/- 50 of the proceeds will go to Nairobi School Music department

Performers:

The Morans: They are a brass group consisting of players ranging from University lecturers Music teachers and Music students. The group was formed about a year ago and plays a wide range of musical styles ranging from works from the Renaissance Period to present day works. Members of this group are also involved in other musical groups such as the Nairobi Orchestra The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya KNYO and The Old Cambrian. Some of them also teach in Nairobis Korogocho slums under the Ghetto Classics programme run by the Art of Music Foundation.

The Old Cambrian: They are members of the Old Cambrian Society Kenya. This society is the alumni organization for Nairobi School. The Old Cambrian consists of alumni from the school ranging between 1978 up to class of 2012. Group members are committed to raising Music Education standard at the school. Several of them volunteer their time and resources in teaching the current students. They are also involved in other musical groups such as the Nairobi Orchestra The National Youth Orchestra of Kenya KNYO and The Morans. Some of them also teach in Nairobis Korogocho slums under the Ghetto Classics programme run by the Art of Music Foundation. This group is a few months old and hopes to keep growing as more students graduate from the school.

Zeze: This is a chamber strings group that was started in September 2011. In past concerts they have performed Baroque Classical Romantic modern and traditional music by Kenyan composers. The group is made up of violins violas cellos and double bass with the occasional accompaniment on the piano. In their most recent concert in November 2012 they performed the beloved Vivaldis Four Seasons as well as debuting an arrangement from the coast of the traditional song Mwangada wa Joka. The group is comprised of various players from the Kenya National Youth Orchestra Conservatoire Orchestra and the Nairobi Orchestra.
