What is Lipa Na M-PESA?

This is a service that allows consumers to pay for goods and services using M-PESA. The buy goods and services functionality is available on your M-PESA Menu under "Lipa Na M-PESA"

How do I pay for goods and services using M-PESA?

+

On the M-PESA Menu Go to "Lipa Na M-PESA and Select Buy Goods Enter the Till Number of the outlet/or sales person you wish to pay Enter the amount you wish to pay (between KSHs.50 – KSHs.70,000) Enter your M-PESA PIN. Confirm that all details are correct and press OK You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-PESA immediately.

What happens if there is a system delay and no SMS is received?

You will receive an SMS from Safaricom notifying you of the delay. If both parties have not received notifications then call Safaricom to confirm status.

Can one cancel a Lipa Na M-PESA transaction that is already in progress?

No. Once a transaction is initiated by the customer, only the receiving merchant can reverse it. Safaricom is not authorized to carry out LIPA NA M-PESA reversals unless they receive official communication from the merchant.

How will the customer know the 'Till Number' of the merchant they intend to pay?

All merchant shops will display their 'Till Numbers' at a place where customers can easily read them when making payments.

How long will it take for M-PESA to process my payment?

Lipa Na M-PESA payments are real time and both consumer and the merchant/retailer will receive an SMS notification confirming the transaction.

How much will it cost me to pay by M-PESA?

Kindly confirm the charges from the merchant before making payment.

What happens if I enter the wrong 'Till Number' when making payments?

+

Safaricom advises its customers to save till numbers that they use frequently on their SIM card prior to making any payment. Should your payments go to a wrong till number, Call M-PESA customer care on 234 immediately and they will contact the merchant paid in error and request them to reverse the transaction. Please always double check that you entered the correct till number.

What happens if I pay the wrong amount e.g. over payment?

The merchant/retailer receiving payments will advise accordingly on how make a refund on over payments.

The service is available to ALL M-PESA customers.

Who can use this service to receive payments?

This service is available for use by all enterprises that accepts payments for goods and services by their customers through M-PESA. These include small and medium enterprises like salons, bars, restaurants, butcheries, spare part shops, kiosks etc

What do I require to sign up for Lipa Na M-PESA account?

You will need to fill a LIPA NA M-PESA application forms available from any Safaricom authorized dealers, M-PESA agents, Safaricom Retail Shop or Kopo Kopo and attach copies the following documents: Business Registration documents from Company Registrar or County Government business permits PIN number ID number of the Business Owner(s) M-PESA and M-Shwari Registered Mobile number

What is a Till?

This is a special SIM card that is created for the purpose of receiving payments from M-PESA. The SIM card will have a unique number known as the till number. It will also have other functions such as receiving payment notifications via SMS and special access for calling customer care The store is given a Name preferred by the Merchant and has ability to hold up to Ksh 50,000,000 The till is linked to the merchants M-PESA number which will be used to accessing funds collected in the merchant till The merchant can then withdraw the cash at an M-PESA Agent, transfer to his M-Shwari account via M-PESA or use the value to purchase more supplies

How will a consumer make payments to my enterprise?

On the M-PESA Menu Go to Lipa Na M-PESA and Select 'Buy Goods and Services Enter the Till Number of the outlet/or sales person you wish to pay to Enter the amount you wish to pay ( between Ksh. 10 - 70,000) Enter your M-PESA PIN number. Confirm that all details are correct and press OK You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-PESA immediately.

What's the customer care number for Lipa Na M-PESA merchants?

Your Lipa Na M-PESA till will be enabled to call 2134. This is a free dedicated line for Lipa Na M-PESA services.

Can a customer reverse or cancel a Buy Goods transaction once paid?

No. Once a transaction is initiated by the customer, only the receiving merchant can reverse it. Safaricom is not authorized to carry out LIPA NA M-PESA reversals unless they receive official communication from the merchant

How will the customer know the 'Till Number' of the merchant they intend to pay?

Merchants will be issued with Lipa Na M-PESA stickers which will be clearly displayed in a strategic location within your outlet

How long will it take for M-PESA to process my payment?

Lipa NA M-PESA payments are real time and both consumer and the merchant will receive an SMS notification confirming the transaction. Upon receipt of every transaction a SMS notification will be received on the till indicating the following: M-PESA transaction ID Date and time Amount paid in Senders details Total balance after payments received

What are the charges?

A fee of 1% of the value of the transaction will be charged to the merchant for every transaction. The charged value will be recovered by Safaricom when the Merchant moved his collections from the Till

What happens if a consumer enters the wrong 'Till Number' when making payments or if I receive payments in error?

The payment will go to a wrong Buy Goods till. Request the customer to call customer care on line 100 or 234 for prepay customer and 200 for postpaid customers. You can also assist to call customer care on 2134 from the Lipa NA M-PESA till. Safaricom will contact the Merchant who received payments in error requesting him/her to initiate a reversal. There will be no cost or reversing payments to the customer and the Merchant In the event that you receive payments on your till in error, you will initiate a request to reverse the payments back to the sender by sending a text message to 234 from your M-PESA registered line that you registered as the number to be used to receive Payments collected at your till (s) The message will be in the format below: [Reverse] [Space][Transaction ID] e.g. Reverse XDE3457 send to 234 This will be an instruction to Safaricom to reverse Payments from your till to the sender. Such instructions will only be accepted if initiated from the Line registered as a settlement account for fund collected.

How do I advise a customer registered on M-PESA but does not have Lipa NA M-PESA on M-PESA menu?

Request the customer to update his/her M-PESA account by selecting 'Update Menu' on their M-PESA. A new menu will be sent to their phone at no cost.

How will a merchant inquire balance or withdraw funds held in his or her Buy Goods Till?

The line submitted by the merchants for the purpose of payments settlement will be enabled to dial USSD code *234*7# that will be used to request balance or withdraw funds. The funds withdrawn will be sent via M-PESA. A merchant can Link his M-PESA personal account to more than one till. Upon balance inquiry or funds withdrawal, the value will be less M-PESA charges (1.5% of value collected)

When and how much can I withdraw funds collected on the Tills?

Funds collected in the Till can be accessed any time of day or night as long as the till Balance is above KSHs.51 The maximum you can request for every withdrawal request is KSHs.70,000. You can withdraw up to a Maximum of KSHs.140,000 per day Your Personal M-PESA account can hold up to a maximum balance of KSHs.100,000 You can move excess fund to your M-Shwari account to enable you withdraw more up to a maximum of KSHs.140,000 per day

How do I withdraw funds from my Till?

The USSD code (*234*7#) used to send the request and your store number or numbers

What happens if my Till is stolen?

+

If the till is stolen, the merchant will obtain a replacement SIM card from any Safaricom shop or dealer and call customer care 2134 for replacement. The till number and store number will remain the same. Only persons authorized will be allowed to request for the SIM replacement The funds in the till cannot be accessed by any other person other than the owner whose personal M-PESA line is attached to the till

Can I change the number used to request for payments?

No. As a fraud prevention measure, the details submitted cannot be changed. To change the details, the Merchant will be required to apply for a new till and attach the new till to desired M-PESA registered Line Its however possible to change details of Next of Kin by submitting a written application to a Safaricom retail shop accompanied by copy of ID and business registration certificate or Business Permit.
