Internet on your phone

Setting Up;

To setup your phone to access internet, send a blank sms to 445. A message which contains internet settings will be sent to your phone. Select “Save“ from options to save all the Settings . You are now ready to Pepea Internet Mkononi na Safaricom.

  1. How do I know my phone is internet enabled?

    Your phone will have an icon called “internet” or “ web” besides other icons such as “message”

  1. How do I access internet on my phone?

    You need to set up the phone with settings and then go to the web/internet icon and put the internet web address you want to access e.g. www.safaricom.com  and select ok/go.

  1. How do I access internet through my computer?

    You need connect to the internet using a Safaricom broadband modem and open the internet browser e.g. Internet Explorer or Mozilla and type in the web address you want to access.

  1. How do I know my phone is 3G enabled?

      The phone will display 3G. (This is seen on the top left or right on most handsets)

  1. How is data charged by Safaricom?

    Data is charged depending on download and upload of information i.e. it’s not time based.

  1. What can I access from my mobile phone?

    www.safaricom.com is very rich in content and you can downaload popular local and international songs, video clips , games, wallpapers, among others. You can also get links to various football sites, education , information e.t.c. Alternatiely, you can google what you are looking for by going to www.google.com

  1. Can I perform e-commerce transactions on www.safaricom.com ?

    Yes you can. Safaricom has developed innonatove services such as Easy Travel which enables you to book and pay for your bus, airline or train ticket.

  1. How much am I charged for browsing internet via my phone?

    Accesssing internet will cost you Ksh 8 per MB. However, you can purchase internet packages (bundles) whish will enable you to browse at discounted rates

  1. Internet-Sometimes referred to as the net, is a system which enables people to communicate with one another via email and access information available on websites e.g. www.safaricom.com
  2. Browser-An application used to access internet sites. E.g. www.google.co.ke, www.yahoo.com
  3. Fiber Optic-A technology for transmitting data which is less susceptible to interference and carries more data than metal cables.
  4. GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)-A network used to send and receive data to mobile devices e.g. phone or computer. One can achieve speeds from 56 to114Kbps on GPRS.
  5. EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution)- An enhancement of GPRS network which allows mobile users to experience higher speeds upto 236.8 kbps.
  6. 3G-3G refers to the third generation of mobile telephony technology which provides more bandwidth capacity and enables users to access more diverse applications e.g. access faster speeds on internet. One can achieve speeds of upto 7.2Mbps on Safaricom 3G Network.
  7. Broadband- High rate internet access.
  8. Data-Pieces of information formatted in a special way e.g. text.
  9. Browsing the internet-Accessing websites while connected to a service provider.
  10. Modem-A device that enables a computer to access the internet e.g. Safaricom Broadband Modem
  11. Data bundle- An internet package which acts as a means of reducing the cost of accessing internet by way of purchasing usage in bigger volumes. 
  12. Out of Bundle-Accessing internet on pay as you go basis i.e. load airtime and access the internet without having to purchase a bundle.
  13. WAP (Wireless Application Protocol)- A secure connection that allows users to access information instantly via mobile phones such as Nokia 1608 e.t.c
  14. Bit- A bit is a basic unit of information storage and communication e.g. the word “Safaricom” has 9 bits and the number “0722100100” has 10 bits.
  15. Byte-Collection of bits make a byte.8 bits = 1 byte e.g. the word “Safaricom” has 1 byte.
  16. Kb (Kilobyte)-Collection of bytes make a Kilobyte. 1024 bytes =1 Kb.
  17. Mb (Megabyte)-Collection of kilobytes make a megabyte. 1024 Kb= 1 Mb.
  18. Gb (Gigabyte)-Collection of megabyte make a gigabyte. 1024 MB=1GB
  19. Internet Enabled Phone-A mobile phone that can access the internet using WAP.
  20. Email-Transmission of  messages over the internet.
  21. Chat- Real-time communication between two users via computer or a phone.
  22. Messenger- Messenger is an all-in-one communication tool, and anyone, anywhere in the world, with a computer and Internet connection can use it .
  23. Download- The process of retrieving information from any computer or website to your phone/computer.

 
Data Bundles

  1. What is the validity of the data bundle ?

    All Safaricom data bundles are valid for 90 days. To extend the validity period, purchase another bundle of your choice.

  1. How do I check balance of my MB/data ?

    Send the word balance to 450 from the Safaricom line and an sms will be sent to your line with the balance.

  1. Can I purchase bundles on my phone?

       Yes. Data bundles can be purchased on any safaricom pre-pay line.
